para-aramid (fiber)

Para-aramid is a synthetic fiber that is resistant to heat and flames and is characterized by extreme tensile strength, impact resistance and low elongation at break. It also has good resistance to acids and alkalis. Barnet has a wide range of para-aramide in the form of high-tenacity yarns and fibers. The strength in relation to the density of the material is very high: so is the E-modulus

The fibers are produced by polymerization and subsequent wet spinning. The PPTA polymer is dissolved in concentrated sulfuric acid and extruded through spinnerets. In the following air gap, the polymer strands in the liquid filament orient themselves to the fiber axis, which is a major factor later for the strength. Through further plugging processes, a fiber is created, which is formed from completely extended liquid crystal chains with a high degree of crystallinity. This leads to an increased fiber strength.

The Para-Aramid fiber production is a two step process, which requires the preceding filament spinning process. The continous filament yarns are getting crimped and cut and can be treated with a finishing agent, depending on the end use of the fiber. We are able to customize the cut length and finish agent for each individual customer requirement. Our staple fiber is suitable for the most common spinning processes, such as the cotton-spinning system and the Dref system. Besides that our fiber is made to be processed in non-woven applications, such as needlepunch, felt or hydro entanglement.

The Para-Aramid filament yarn will get cut precisely to very short lengths for reinforcement purposes. The short cut fibers are mostly used to increase strength and wear resistance in thermoplastics, rubber compounds or wetlaid nonwovens, while having great abrasion resistance.

We have a wide range of different Para-Aramid recycling types in our portfolio, which differ from each other by the raw material selection. We use for example decommissioned bullet proof vests to recycle them mechanically. So we are able to regain a fiber with an average cut length of 60mm, which can be used as a blend item for a carded nonwoven. Furthermore we are capable to produce shorter cut length to be use for spinning processes.
